How can I help my child in Drama?

Years 7 and 8

Year 7 and 8 drama is all about life skills. We try to promote confidence, communication and team work. Anything you can do to help your child to speak clearly and use the correct language (i.e.: not “text speak” or colloquialisms) at home will really help what we are trying to achieve in drama. I would also encourage students to use the mirror to try to establish what their face looks like when they are attempting to express emotion. This may help their assessment work as we mark use of body, voice and facial expression in performance.

Years 9, 10 and 11 BTEC

Students are often asked to continue to with their coursework at home. We would encourage you to look at their work on occasion to see how they are doing. They are required to do character research, development and analysis as well as self-assessment and evaluation. We would also ask you to help your child to learn their lines when they have a scripted performance to work on. Also please encourage the students to see as many live performances as they can – this will always help them improve in drama. We would also encourage you to look into extra curricular drama groups either within school, at the weekends or in the holidays. Any chance to perform will help.

Years 10 and 11 GCSE

GCSE students are required to sit a written exam at the end of year 10 and re-take at their own expense in year 11 if they do not do as well as expected. In order that they pass the exam first time they need to start working from day one of the course. We would ask you to help your child by assisting them in script learning, look at their written paper when they are given it and go through it again if there is any confusion. Also please encourage the students to see as many live performances as they can – this will always help them improve in drama. We would also encourage you to look into extra curricular drama groups either within school, at the weekends or in the holidays. Any chance to perform will help.
