English as an Additional Language

We usually have a small number of students who are at the early stages of learning English and a number of others for whom English is an additional language. Students who are learning English are withdrawn from some lessons to receive intensive English lessons but the majority of support is given in class. In a small number of cases we consider disapplication from part of the curriculum to enable students to concentrate on core subjects.

Whenever possible we encourage students to take a GCSE in their first language but this depends on the availability of an examiner for the oral examination. Students taking GCSE exams in other subjects have access to a dictionary in their first language and extra time if they have been in the UK for less than two years and have not previously been educated in English.

Mrs Panchal is responsible for the progress of students with English as an additional language. In the majority of cases students make rapid progress in learning English and do well in examinations.
